On Wednesday (9/3/2022), Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) issued Technical Note No. 38/2022, which clarifies the use of face masks in airports and aircraft.

According to the document, the use of masks in public areas of airports (places without access control) must follow local decrees. Therefore, the use of masks in public areas (lobby, check-in, public area establishments, food courts and parking lots) of the airport is not obligatory.

However, the Technical Note reinforces the mandatory use of face masks on the "Air Side" of the airport, stipulated in RDC (Collegiate Board Resolution) No. 456/2020. The Airside comprises all the controlled access environments at an aerodrome: aircraft handling areas, employee and/or vehicle access control gates, X-ray, departure and arrival halls, restricted area establishments, courtyard and transport vehicles.

In addition, the use of certain masks remains prohibited: acrylic or plastic masks; masks fitted with exhalation valves, including N95 and PFF2 masks; scarves, cloth bandanas or any other material that is not characterized as a protective mask for professional or non-professional use; face shields alone; protective masks for non-professional use made with only one layer or that do not comply with the minimum requirements set out in ABNT PR 1002 - Guide to basic requirements for testing methods, manufacture and use.

The RDC determines that the face mask must be adjusted to the face, covering the nose and mouth, minimizing spaces that allow air and respiratory droplets to enter or exit. It is important to note that the obligation to wear face masks will be waived in the case of people with: autistic spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, sensory impairments or any other disabilities that prevent them from making proper use of a face mask, according to a medical declaration, as well as in the case of children under three years of age.
